The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.

The Story: Vault 101 - Jewel of the Wastes
For 200 years, Vault 101 , a fallout shelter, has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Key Features:

  • Limitless Freedom! - Take in the sights and sounds of the vast Capital Wasteland! See the great monuments of the United States lying in post-apocalyptic ruin! You make the choices that define you and change the world. Just keep an eye on your Rad Meter!

  • The Power of Choice! - Feeling like a dastardly villain today, or a Good Samaritan? Pick a side or walk the line, as every situation can be dealt with in many different ways. Talk out your problems in a civilized fashion, or just flash your Plasma Rifle.
  • Blast 'Em Away With V.A.T.S.! -Even the odds in combat with the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System for your Pip-Boy Model 3000! V.A.T.S. allows you to pause time in combat, target specific body parts on your target, queue up attacks, and let Vault-Tec take out your aggression for you. Rain death and destruction in an all-new cinematic presentation featuring gory dismemberments and spectacular explosions.

4 out of 5 stars Short Main quest but Challenging   November 15, 2008
I totally lost a weekend with this game. I had just relocated my copies of the first 2 so it was a breeze to get out and start the questing. Found ammo tough to come by especially for the Scoped 44 that was a huge early find for me. Lots of lock ups on exit even with patch with data loss on 2 occaisions that really hurt (save often).
Nothing new really the story line not very satisfying and end game too limited but as a way to kill time it is deadly to spare hours. If you liked the first two you will probably like this.

5 out of 5 stars The complainers are IDIOTS! (Fallout 3 Survival Edition)   November 13, 2008
After reading all the posts, I was chomping at the bit worring that my Survival Edition was not worth the $, and my clock was cheap crap. Well, I have one thing to say..I LOVE MY SURVIVAL EDITION!!!
The Pipboy3000 is absoutly the COOLIST!!! the giger counter in the upper left is actually made from a compass! (it works too!) the knob moves, the slider wheel moves, the buttons under the desplay light up red when I press them and the display is bright (just wish it was military time). The only thing I did differently was put good batteries in when I got it, not the ones that came w/ it. I cant stop looking at it!! WooHoo!!
The art of FO3 book is beautiful! The bobble head is FLAWLESS (his head keeps bobbing and moving for the longest time! extremely COOL!) The lunch box is perfect (Im gonna use it tommorow) and cant wait to see the "making of" video (its in my player and gonna watch it after I post this. I personally think it's worth every cent.

5 out of 5 stars Post Apocalyptic world from Bethesda's point of view done well.   November 10, 2008
Although it is not the classic Fallout or Fallout 2 of days passed :( it does bring back that classic and incredible feeling I got playing those games. The idea you can essentially be the person you want to in this post apocalyptic world.

The main quest seems kinda lame if one compares it to the originals, but if you wanna do that the aspect of this game (which is a good majority of it, I'd say 75%+ of it) the wandering around and exploring the world before you (WHICH is massive and absolutely rendered beautifully) is perfect.

Having been a fan of the series it was hard for me to not compare it to the first two in some way, shape, or form. However I did go into the game with an open mind realizing it has been a decade since Fallout 2 came out AND it was being developed by a new developer for the first time ever. With Black Isle Studios defunked now (RIP) and Bethesda taking over they scrapped Van Buren (the original working title) and redeveloped it from the ground up using the Oblivion Engine.

The game itself has some of that same feeling Oblivion would give one but with a post apocalyptic feeling... Essentially there is a main quest with tons of side quests you can do if you wish (also part of the original Fallout series). The graphics engine was ramped up for this one compared to Oblivion, it looks amazing even if you have to put it on Medium or less (I run it on a mix between High and Ultra). The gameplay is smooth and fights are great. VATS (Fallout's answer to slowing down time and choosing what part of your enemy you attack) is good but just lacks with the new FPS aspect of the game, it seems almost lame as you can CHARGE hit "v" go into VATS bam bam bam, dead... The NPCs are still lifeless and frozen in feeling and look, it drives me nuts and I hate it still as I did in Oblivion, but if you are looking for a great game which has made it as one of my top 10 RPGs of all time check out Fallout 3 you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars This game is a BLAST!!!!!!!   November 10, 2008
I've played Fallout 1,2 and tactics. This game is the ultimate evolution of the three previous versions. I just love the ability to be able to change between first-person and third person views and the V.A.T.S. targeting system is the perfect substitute for the turn-based combat from previous games. I find myself playing this game for what seems to be on hour and then looked up at the clock and five hours ago by. Time definitely flys by when playing this game.

3 out of 5 stars oh look, another elder scrolls game. joy...   November 9, 2008
this 3rd installment is excellent in the realm of physics but has "Bethesda made this product" written all over it! the orignal 2(and I played and owned those from 1997/99 so i am a veteran player) had better dialouge and more atmosphere this is just "Oblivian" in the future times with a differnt sky same font, diffent landscape same lame font, and the bland dialogue trees of "where's the bar" "You'll have to go south then east for that." "Wheres my old man?" "He disappeared some time ago, followed by the red bull" lol. "Where's Heironious Fox" "His disappeared sometime ago followed by the red bull." this has no feeling of "bleak I'm alone in the wastes" as the originals and is just a lame Oblivion clone with stupid Oblivian "derelict/wasteland in Oblivion stupid highschool attempt at humor" feel and I don't feel like I'm in anything but a stupid game, and I don't care. "a bully demands (thy) your moldy crispie creame sweat roll, 'what do you do" step on it, trade it, slink out the backdoor, or whatever, that is a character generated question from the days of "Arena" and this is Elder Fallout, not Fallout3.
the combat is second to none, but just for the sake of combat, not the cause to go shooting things, like I somehow "Care" for these clownish NPC's to go fight for them, as i did Fallout 1&2 and all interplay written dialogue which this does little to honor. Just shooting them to shoot is not why you buy a RPG, now is it. Get far Cry or 'Gears' for that.) not this stupid "made for TV moive undercut for kids peice of crap.

And as for the "collector's editon" and(i can proudly admit I didn't even buy the even more sickly francesesd "Survival" Edition.) had a broken bobble head, though I glued his feet back on the base with testor's cement and he works well .the game is not as interesting as the bobble. what can i say, he's(to me0 the fallout 1/2 mascot with 101 painted on his backside. with his feet on the base, I'll probably set him in the dash but everything else is a "3".
