A lot of features for a reasonable price November 7, 2008 My in-laws have an LCD HDTV and surround system, but their DVD player was several years old and had only RCA and S-video outputs. Not only was this limiting their resolution, it wouldn't allow the aspect ratio to be set correctly. My in-laws are not technically adept, so I needed to keep things simple.
I did some quick research online for the least expensive DVD player I could find locally with HDMI output, and came up with this unit and a $49.99 Sony unit. I ran over to a big box electronics store and the Sony was out of stock, so I bought one of these. My very first DVD player was a Philips DVD-525 and I've been pleased with Philips products, so I expected good things.
Next I went to a big retail chain known for its low prices and purchased an HDMI cable. ($99 for Monster? Please.) They also had the same DVD unit for a few dollars less, but it wouldn't have been worth the hassle to return it.
Got back to the house, swapped out the players, hooked up the HDMI, and set the output preferences on the unit, all within 20 minutes or so. The rest of the weekend was high-definition bliss (with the proper aspect ratios). The resolution was so fantastic that I was in awe, and was finally convinced that it's time to buy my own HDTV. The ability to mod the unit is nice, but I'll probably never use it (I doubt the in-laws will want to watch my Region 2 Godzilla movies).
Short version: A very nice player for a very nice price, with a lot of extra features my in-laws and I will never use, that will be more than adequate until they upgrade to Blu-Ray (this Christmas when we buy them a player).
Nice for the price October 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this DVD player because of the region free mode. Before I bought the DVD, I knew there maybe a chance it would not be in a Region Free mode. So, I looked up the unlock code just in case. So, I actually bought this DVD at Best Buy around $60. Perform the Region Unlock but did notice the region code was still US and not set to Region Free. Set Region to 0 and DVD became region free. Tested and it works! Needed this badly since we have many DVDs from Sweden that my kids wanted to view again.
The DVD player is very thin and light. I read the reviews and knew the tray maybe in question and placing the DVD disc in the proper location is a must since not placing the disc properly may come off the tray while tray is set within the player which in turn the disc maybe lost within the player. Actually, it's easy to retrieve because opening the case is quite simple.
A Great Muti-Region DVD Palyer with Great Price! October 23, 2008 I just got this at Wal-mart last week. To my surprise, it's only $57.88 it's cheaper than Sony NS700 and it's very slim, stylish and it's shining black color. I really like the design - looks really cool and it's remote also much better than Philips 3140 which I just had before this model! After the adjustment on the remote it does play any region dvds - I'm very happy and satisfied with this product - the video and sound quality is great - Now I'm waiting to receive my HDMI-DVI cable so I can see what's result looks like!
great player - bs reviews September 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic player which most certainly does play PAL discs without a problem. There is also a superb modified firmware available at videohelp.com which gives longer filenames and some other interface improvements.
The person who claims they had trouble getting discs out of the thin tray and lost discs into the player is...shall we say...less than truthful. It is impossible to push discs into the guts of the player without tripping the door close sensor. Even so, the tray will retract and the disc will fall into the recessed portion of the tray. The cover is held on with screws. How tough would it be to remove the cover if you needed to do so? Not very. I suppose you could turn the unit upside down and shake it to dislodge the disc from the tray. The player is designed for use under regular gravity and in a somewhat stable physical location.
MP3 and WMA support is very good, supporting up to about 650 MP3s per directory. The USB port is in the front which is convenient but somewhat ugly, to be honest. For homemade data discs, I recommend using the freeware program FolderSort (Windows) as the files are sorted by the raw 8.3 format which does not always give the same order as the long filenames.
DVDs tend to get stuck inside the player September 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had this machine for about two weeks, and it works fine...plays all regions with no problem, once you enter the remote code.
Unfortunately, it doesn't always eject the DVD when you're done watching. We've probably played 12 discs, and 3 of them have slipped out of the tray and disappeared into the bowels of the player. You can hear the disc rattling around loose if you tip the machine. We got all three discs out eventually, but not before they'd gotten pretty badly scratched. Rather than take the risk of messing up any more DVDs, I think I'll return it.
