Great package, great price July 15, 2010 ttnyc The capability of this pc is really impressive. I do alot of intense CAD design, and it easily handles the load while running other memory sapping software in the background. Its a quiet machine with a powerful punch. Should have come wifi, but thats an easy cheap upgrade you can do for yourself. Definitely worth your time and money.
Buyer beware: Insert boot disk June 22, 2010 RFM (Colorado Springs, CO) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'd read a few reviews here on Amazon and other places that reported problems with this PC out of the box. This machine had all the bells and whistles on paper and I decided to give it a shot anyway as my son wanted a powerful PC for a high school graduation present. I gambled and lost. We plugged it in and powered up to get the message "Insert boot disk". No disks or software came with this Gateway PC.
There is a Gateway Technical Support Center here in town, so I'll give them a shot and then try Amazon. So far, I have to agree with others that gambling with this sytem is a bad idea; especially if it is intended as a gift. Buyer beware.
UPDATE: Amazon was great. They FedEx'd a replacement out and we received it two days after I got the RPA authorization. The replacement Gateway works fine, including the SD drives that others have said didn't work when they got theirs. I changed the rating from one star to two stars. It's evidently hit and miss whether you'll get a lemon or not. Good luck!
Beware! Gateway is not what it used to be! June 13, 2010 Richard Federici (North Carolina) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
First of all, let me state that I have been a loyal Gateway customer since 1994. This is my 5th Gateway desktop, plus, I have a so-far dependable Gateway laptop [admittedly, not used very often]. In addition, I bought a Gateway for my son several years back when he was away at school. All have proven to be dependable, solid machines and the tech/customer support top-notch. My last desktop from Gateway, prior to this purchase, was a 7200X model purchased in early 2005. It still ran beautifully with what it had. I only upgraded because it was having some trouble with a few isolated software programs of late. I figured it was time for a new one.
So, I purchased this DX4831-07 machine with a 23" FHX monitor [also Gateway]. At first, I was super happy. It looked sharp, ran extremely quietly, was fast and powerful. Lots of room, vivid images/video, crisp sound, not too big. It seemed perfect. Then, I noticed that the CPU cover did not look like it could come off very easily. Nothing was wrong, but I figured sooner or later I'd need to take it off, if only to dust. Contacted tech support. Useless. Over and over again they repeated the same refrain. Gateway does not recommend opening the cover and they have no spec sheet to tell me how anyway. OK. Fine.
Yesterday - have had the machine for 2 weeks now - I tried to insert a perfectly good media card into the very convenient looking front media card reader. Nothing happened. Attempted to use the Photo Frame software by pressing the front panel button. Nothing. The USB ports work, as do the front panel audio inputs, so it must be the media card reader. Contacted support. Useless. Ran me through processes I already knew to do: checking for updated drivers, rebooting, etc. Finally, after numerous robotic sounding e-mails [phone tech costs, by the way], they wanted me to reformat. No. I just got through 2 weeks of setting it up as I like. Next was to ship it back for repair ... at my cost to ship. I have opted to buy an external reader here at Amazon for $12.
As a final test, I contacted tech once more. After reading the on-line manuals [the in box documentation is non-existent], I learned that the extra drive bay in front is accessible without opening the back cover. Supposedly, I can put a second drive in there from the front. They say "two 3.5" front-access, tool-less swap HDD bays". I asked Gateway tech how this is done and where I can purchase a compatible drive. Guess what??? Nothing. They don't know. Useless.
The computer is mostly fine, I just don't expect it to last very long without me having to haul it in to a local repair shop. Very disappointing. After 16 years of loyal purchases. I will never, EVER, buy another Gateway product. They seem like an outfit going out of business.
Great machine - Price is just a bonus! May 31, 2010 S. Talbot (Ashburn, VA) Fantastic machine "for the money"! But don't let the "for the money" fool you. Typically this means it's of a quality which is only acceptable when paired with a bargain price. In this case, it's simply a fantastic machine that's coming at a great bargain. I spent months researching a middle-of-the road gaming system in the $500-$1000 range and simply couldn't get anywhere close to beating this deal (either building it myself or building it at various custom PC shops). The only concern was the "Gateway" brand which typically isn't known for high performance. I can say that this systems can play any game currently on the market at max rez / max quality settings. (FSAA might need to be turned down, but there's really no reason to have this over 2x/4x anyways)
Also - ours (as others have mentioned) came with a 5770 video card instead of the listed 5750 card. Nice little spiff to make me that much more happy. :)
Get off the fence - buy this machine and you'll likely not be disappointed. :)
Better than a new Mac, half the price May 29, 2010 Scott Mandeville (Boston, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This computer is sleek sexy and fast. The DX4831-07 has a quad core I5 processor in it, and 8 GB of memory. The newest 27" Imac also has the quad core I5 processor, but only comes with 4GB of memory standard (8 for an additional $200) and costs $2000-$2200. I added a 24" HD monitor for and extra $200 and the total cost was still less than half of what I would have paid for a comperable Mac.
Windows 7 is running all of my programs wonderfully, It's fast and easy to work with, and I couldn't be happier. I am an architect and will be using this computer to run memory intense 3D CAD modeling programs, photo editing software and other video and graphics intense programs. This machine can definitely handle it. Itunes is even loaded on my computer to manage all of my music, movies and apps for my Iphone, so don't worry about apple products working with other apple products, go PC.
The only issue I've had with this computer is that it has a DVD player and not Blu-Ray. The screen resolution looks great. Pictures and graphics are amazing on the large resolution monitor I bought, but then I put in a DVD and playback looks fuzzy by comparison. It's not bad, it just falls short of what the machine is capable of. For a couple hundred dollars though, you could get an internal or external to add on, and you're still $800 cheaper than a Mac.
