Not reliable at all July 24, 2010 S. Igo I've had this item for a little over a year and have been having problems with it for a while. It takes forever to connect to my computer and often dismounts itself if I bump it or plug in another USB drive next to it. I am worried that it is going to crash on me soon and lose all of my music. Do not buy this product. It works fine for a while, but is not reliable at all.
Nice drive before it failed - TERRIBLE SUPPORT from Toshiba. July 13, 2010 IT Guy I've owned this drive for about 18 months. Used it rarely, only for backups. It's never been dropped etc. When I connect it to a PC, it says it can't be recognized all of a sudden. I imagine the drive itself is fine, but the interface board is probably bad.
Anyway, I go to Toshiba's site expecting to find a place where I can enter the serial # and check the warranty info as well as request an RMA right there. Nope. I call the phone number on Toshiba's site and get transferred to another dept once I explain my needs. The second dept gives me a number to call on Monday since they're open 8 - 5 M-F. I call that number and the rep answers in a not so clear voice that I need to call another number. Mind you, none of the numbers beyond the 1st are 800 numbers. They're all area code specific. I finally call the 4th number and the rep takes my E-mail address over the phone which is always fun and tells me I should receive a RMA form shortly. I can't comment on whether or not I will receive the form at this point or what the form will require me to do to get my replacement, but based on my experience I'm already at 1 star so I don't think it matters much.
I'm giving this drive 1 star due to reliability issues and having the worst return process I've ever experienced for a hard drive. I've probably returned 5 hard drives under warranty and never before had to call anyone. It was all done through the manufacturer's website.
1 GREAT DRIVE July 1, 2010 C. Vanderpool (cvpool33) This is an awesome drive to have.
The previous people with problems of it "clicking" or not being recognized by their computer are NOT using the provided cable (or not using another high speed usb if they want a longer cord than the one provided) After 2 years of owning it, ive just encountered this problem...but the problem is not your drive. Actually its the cable that you need to replace. You will continue to have the problem if you use another "similar" cord, but one that isnt high speed like that which is supplied with it. You need another high speed one and it will fix the error. Frankly, I think its great that all I need to do is replace a $10 cable after 2 years and will not loose any data like other drives have in the past.
Since this is my very first problem with it, and Im very hard on the drive (both with capacity/constant download+upload and moving it around to several computers everyday) I would say this is a VERY good product. I do keep it in a case, but leave the cord attached & hanging out of the case for easy plug in, so maybe thats why mine is lasting & the cord took 2 years to break. You decide.
Short lifespan July 1, 2010 sueb When I purchased this item about a year ago, it worked wonderfully and I loved it. About 6 months later it started occasionally refusing to automatically start up, just every once in a while. Now at just about a year it is all I can do to access anything, much less transfer all of my valuable data from this rotten thing.
I love it when it works, hate it when it's testy. I'll be replacing it soon and it won't be with another Toshiba.
Crashed after a year of light use and although covered by warranty Toshiba is unresponsive June 11, 2010 Pablo (Boston) I used this drive occasionally as a back-up. In other words, it was used no more than a few dozen times. It crashed after about a year of use. Toshiba has failed to send me an RMA for the product, although Toshiba has confirmed that it covered by warranty. I have made three phone requests, one by fax and two by email. No answer. It is impossible to get a live person at their service center, and messages left on their answering system are not returned. Totally unsatisfactory service, by far the worst I have seen in years.
Therefore, I do not recommend this product.
