4 out of 5 stars Easy To Use   December 2, 2008
I have used the VRDMC5 for about a month now. I run it every 2-3 week days and on weekends, so it's had a lot of use. Got a great price on Amazon! The unit is very easy to use. I first transferred all of my camcorder tapes (taken with a Sony Handycam Digital8 DCR-TRV460) to Sony DVD-R disks with the firewire cable that came with the camcorder. You literally only have to push the buttons to make a few choices and the rest is automatic ... start and stop. It's very nice and not hard to figure out (but I did read the manual ... pretty simple). I record everything at HQ quality, so it takes two disks to record a full tape. Now I have moved on to recording my old VHS tapes. This is a little more work. Transferring a full VHS tape to DVD at HQ quality also requires two disks; 1 hr a piece. The VRDMC5 does not control the VCR player (like it does the camcorder), so you have to be present to stop the VCR when it has transferred the 1st hour of Play from the VHS tape. I set a timer so I know right when to get back to the VRDMC5 to stop the VCR after the 1st hr of play, put another DVD in the recorder, and start the VCR again to record the 2nd hour of tape. It's a little bit of a hassle, but worth it to digitize the tapes. All-in-all, the video quality from recorded DVDs is OK, but I think the colors could be brighter .. like they appear on the MC5 viewing screen during recording. One more thing ..... the Date/Time stamps from a camcorder tape does not transfer to the DVD, but they do for recordings from VHS tapes. I talked to Sony (on-line chat) about this and that's just the way it is. If you want the camcorder Date/Time stamps to transfer, you have to run the signal through a computer. Of course, that defeats the purpose of the MC5. Overall, I recommend the MC5. I can see from VHS tapes that are about 18 years old that, sure enough, they have aged ... the picture is a little fuzzy. More recent recordings transfer to DVD clearly. I wish I had digitized my VHS tapes a long time ago, but at least the MC5 makes it easy to do today!

3 out of 5 stars Easy to use if you don't do anything unusual...   December 1, 2008
Plug your camcorder to it with a DV cable, insert a DVD-R and hit the big red button. You can watch it play (no sound) and it ejects the disk when done. What could be easier? Well... that all only works if you are recording 1 hour of tape. If the tape goes on to more than one disk then you are in trouble until you figure out how to manually record and "finalize" the second disk. Also, if you are not using a DV cable then you have to manually record and finalize as well. To "finalize" a disc you have to hit the menu-arrow-enter keys over 10 times. Also, if you hit the "menu" key they you can no longer hit the "big easy red record button". All this weirdness and poor menu interface is the reason I gave it just 3 stars. It records just fine.

Yes, you can set the "record quality" (which adjusts how many minutes of video can be recorded on the disc) to ensure an entire tape can be transferred to one DVD.

I wish Sony had done some things to make using this a lot more user friendly:

1) Add a "finalize and eject" button
2) Make access to the "record quality" menu since I, at least, spend a lot of time switching back and forth.
3) Handle spanning multiple discs automatically (by allowing me to hit the record button again with the second disc to continue and finalize)

5 out of 5 stars Totally Perfect!   November 30, 2008

This great little gadget works the first time, all the time, every time. And NO computer is required. Can you imagine trying to transfer a VHS tape to DVD with a PC involved! That would never happen. This stand alone unit is the way to go. Oh yes, it is SUPER easy to use.

4 out of 5 stars A great way to get organized.   November 26, 2008
I purchased this unit a month ago and I'm very pleased with it. At last I have an easy way to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD. It's also a snap to turn digital photo's from your camera's memory card into a slide show on DVD. This product does everything they say it will do! I highly recommend it.

The product appears to be the device that I was expecting to receive, but I have not had the chance to use it and verify quality. I plan to do so in the very near future.
