I don't know if I was unlucky and got the one bad drive off the line, but I have to share my experience with you all as a strong warning.
My drive has been a nightmare experience: I bought Nero Ultra and it has not functioned well with it, with numerous errors and aborted burning attempts. It has had all sorts of weird issues with being recognized by my computer. I've wasted about half a spindle of DVDs on attempts to get it to burn -- it's worked about 50% of the time. Just now it borked during a burn, caused my whole system to freeze, and may have resulted in one of my hard drives being partially erased. Checking out Sony's support site is super-helpful: they have NO support for the drive whatsoever -- just an empty page set aside for it.
Every time I've bought anything computer-related from Sony, I've been sorely disappointed, and this burner is no exception. For therapy's sake, I'm going to buy a new DVD burner from ANY company besides Sony, take this P.O.S. outside, and smash it into a million pieces.

I think this is a great product. It has been very easy to use. The Nero software that came with the product leaves a lot to be desired. I am not at all happy with Nero. I bought this recorder to transfere my photo albums to DVD to play in my DVD player on the TV screen. Nero keeps telling me (in the photo slideshow mode) that I can only write once to a disk. It doesn't matter if it is DVD R or DVD RW. It is impossible to write all your photographs to a disk, all at one time. You have to use several sessions to fill up the disk. I'll have to find another software product to work with.
Great product October 11, 2005 J. Gedeon (Miami, Florida United States) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
First of all, It's a sony, meaning that it costs more money than a usual burner like this does, but in exchange you get the quality that in my opinion no other brand provides.
Now, for the burner, it's very small, it burns full DVDs very fast (15 minute for a full 4.7 Gb DVD at 4x speed), It's external so you can take it anywere you want. It hasn't given me any problems, and I'm not expecting any.
It comes with some burning software (nero), which is cool, but the downside is that the software is labeled "SE" (Sony Edition). I tried to use nero with another burner and it didn't work. I didn't really appreciate that. Other than that, I think it's a great product.
Top rate! September 21, 2005 B. Brent (Las Vegas, NV USA) 17 out of 22 found this review helpful
After doing extensive reaseach for an external DVD burner, I decided to go with Sony's current fastest burner. Sony has a terrific reputation for quality and as long as it's under one year, Sony service is quite good.
Pricing....Amazon wasn't the best price on the Internet, but based on Amazon's reputation, this is where I made my purchase. The order came quickly to my residence.

The product itself is very good , however the documentation is of the worst kind.
