Poor Quality December 28, 2008 After reading consistently 4 and 5 star reviews for these earbuds I was looking forward to getting a pair. However, after two tries I'm giving these back and sticking with tried and true V-Moda Bass Freq earphones.
The first pair of SOUNDXTC earphones came damaged, apparently from the shipping. The packaging that EarphonesPlus uses for these earphones is a simple plastic pouch, just large enough to house the earphones and the extra earbuds. They were mailed in padded envelope. So it came as no surprise that something could easily happen to them during the mailing process. The earpiece on one of them arrived damaged, completely separated from its housing. The response from EarphonesPlus was that they were focusing on making a quality product instead of spending a lot of money on packaging. They offered to send a replacement in a box. But since another friend had ordered the same pair for me (this was being given as a gift) it was simply returned for a refund by the first friend.
The second pair appeared to have come fully intact this time. However, upon opening the second pair from the flimsy pouch I discovered the black cable casing that inserts into the back of the earphone was as if it had never been cemented in place. This is the precise area where you hold the earphone between your fingers to place it in your ear. -- I don't know if these two instances are a result of problems with the manufacturing process, the packaging and distribution, or both. But I do think the adage "Penny wise, pound foolish" applies here.
Despite all of this, I was still interested in experiencing the quality of their sound. These earphones have a wider than typical frequency range. So as a Classical music lover I was looking forward to experiencing a full musical range. (It's much easier to be satisfied with cheaper headphones if you only listen to rock and other band-based genres.) While they sounded pretty good listening to some jazz and vocalists, they lacked much of any bass. Now this might have something to do with the fact that largest of the three sizes of silicone earbuds that came with them were still too small. (More on this in a moment.) Moving on to some Classical (Beethoven) I found the higher pitched tones to be quite clear and pleasant. But again I felt like cello and bass parts were heavily muted...nothing like the wide tonal range you hear when you listen to a full orchestra perform.
Back to the silicone earbuds. I feel like they should have offered a wider range between the small, medium and large. I had no such problems of too-small-of-a-size with the V-Moda and Sennheiser earbuds that I have owned before. As a result, they had a slightly wispy quality to them, unless I was in a room with no sounds and held the earphones in place in my ears. Since I travel the subways of NYC with my iPod daily, I can't even imagine possibly being able to hear much of what is said in many a podcast with these earbuds, let alone try to enjoy music. If the whole idea behind earbuds are to block out most extraneous sounds, these fail dramatically for my not-too-large ear canals.
Between the twice-damaged earphones and the disappointing sound experience, these just aren't worth it.
average, but the price was impressive November 17, 2008 paid around 20 dollars, very cheap and expected cheap. After using them for 3 months, these are the 50 dollar pair for 20 dollars. I am happy with the purchase and would recommend to anyone, but be advised, these do not compare to the 100 dollar pair but so what.....
Good set of inexpensive earbuds November 16, 2008 Any pair of earbuds tends to hurt my ears after an hour or so, and this pair is no different....but no worse, either. So, if you are not bothered by earbuds, these are great. They cancel enough ambient noise so that you can just float off into your own little world, which is nice.
Updated Review!! September 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK, this review replaces my earlier review. First off, as stated in my previous review, the headphones are very comfortable and isolate sound well. I get a very good quality sound with good bass response. Overall, I think these are a great value.
In my original review, I discussed a short near the 1/4" jack that had occurred after about one month of use. The sound to one side was cutting out periodically. As I stated in my previous review, the cable is pretty thin and not very robust and needs to be treated carefully. Another small gripe is that the rubber ear pieces come off easily. I've almost lost one 4 or 5 times. The headphones come with some other ear pieces in different sizes. However, they ARE different sizes. So, if you lose the one that fits best, you may not get a great fit with the other pieces.
Now for the update (and the good part). I was ready just to move on with my life without calling them about my issue. However, after I posted my review, a representative from SOUNDXTC contacted ME via e-mail after reading my review and offered to replace the headphones for free (even though the 30-day guarantee period had already passed). Sure enough, I received my replacement headphones within a few days and they are working perfectly. Customer service like that is rare and very much appreciated. I have no doubt that this company will handle any issues that may come up with these headphones. So...for the price, these earphones are worth 5 stars. For the service I give it a 6th Star... if that's possible.
Finnally earbuds that fit August 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I looked around for sometime trying to find reasonably priced, comfortable earbuds and I finally found them. These came with the different sized earpieces so it's easy to find the right size that fits you. They are comfortable, I wore them for hours on long bus trips and they didn't bother my ears at all like the ones that came with my iPod. The sound was good on the apple ones, but after about 3 minutes I found myself haveing to make sure they were not falling out of my ears and after about 7 minutes they were already making my ears hurt because they were to big. The Sound Squared earbuds are light weight, they fit, and are very comfortable and they sound great aswell. They only thing that I was not pleased about is the fact that the cable is not angled where you actully plug it in to your device, It is just straight. I am a little concerned that it might develope a weak spot in the wire because of this. I've just tried to be carefull and not cause any extra stress to the wire. Also not to pleased that the wire is so long, once again more margine for weak spots developing in the wire. Other than that very pleased with the earbuds and I thought they were very resonably priced as well.
