Bad software, scanner not impressive June 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The software or the scanner will not read the information in dark areas of black and white negatives, causing clipping (featureless solid black areas). The software is not intuitive, is very obtuse, and is very, very limiting. There is a setting for "best quality scans" hidden in the [more...] menu under [settings]. The default is "good quality". Even after finding this and selecting "best" the scanner fails to read dark areas. It is not compatible with VueScan software, so your options to drive it with better software are not existing. Do not waste your money on this one.
Great value for the money November 21, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am using this scanner for trips to the National Archives - it is compact, lightweight, and sets up quickly. It is making excellent scans of black and white photos suitable for book reproduction. The software set-up was easy, with no issues on my laptop - USB cables allow true plug and play, but be sure to use a USB 2.0 port to get the maximum speed out of this unit instead of the older USB 1.1 ports (newer computers will almost certainly have the faster connection). Scanning is much faster than my earlier HP 5370C, and this scanner allows batch scanning, which is a big plus for my application.
Be sure to use the travel lock if you are moving it around, and of course, be sure to unlock it before attempting a scan! I put reminder labels on the front and back of the scanner to insure that I don't forget this important process. The lock, a sliding plastic lever on the bottom of the unit is very easy to use, but the location makes it operation easy to overlook.
I have not experimented with color scans with the unit, but the depth of the black and white it excellent, truly remarkable for a machine that cost less than $ 100 delivered to my door. You can spend a lot more than this for a scanner of course, but for my purpose, it is a great little device.
No tech support October 13, 2007 Scanmaker made by Microtek no longer offers telephone tech support. The only reason I purchased the product was to transfer images from 35mm negatives to my computer and produce photographs.
Without tech support I am unable to figure out how to adjust the various settings to reproduce the image from the slides or film strips.Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner with Transparent Media Adapter
Great, when it works ... October 6, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The scanner is exception, when it functions. The software that comes with it is barely usable and crashes often. That said, when I upgrade the software, it did change the situation: It went from crashing often to crashing every time. Even the "photoshop plugin" is merely a call to launch the software - when again crashes.
Scanmaker S450 is OK September 28, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This scanner is compact and works well, producing good clarity and color and the Twain driver has good and easy controls. The only problem I have had is that the Vista driver will crash after a while and I will have to unplug the USB cord and plug it back in to get the computer to find the scanner.
