1 out of 5 stars Garbage   December 9, 2008
This thing is a piece of trash at best. I just got 4 of them at my office and installing them has been a nightmare. Good luck if you ever want to scan anything. Not to mention I did some checking in the HP support forums and the problems are the same across the board and HP doesn't seem the least bit interested in fixing any of them. Too busy counting their money i guess. I'd like to punch the person from our company who bought these things.

3 out of 5 stars HP could have done better   December 1, 2008
The HP 2840 is a decent model with great print quality and fast print rate. Why I only rate this printer 3 stars or okay is it is expensive to operate and it makes too much noise when idle when it does it "cycling" and printing. This cycling issue is very annoying and I do not recall having this issue on prior HP printers. I have had the HP 2840 for over a year.

I paid in the $600s when I bought it and saw that it is currently listed at over $1,200.00. I wouldn't buy it at that price.

I picked up this model after my other HP laser printer died (after many years of use) and was hopeful that this upgrade wouldn't disappoint. The print quality is great no doubt about it. It also prints quickly whether you are doing black ink only or color.

I quickly figured out how to use the BLACK INK only portion for my invoices and other documents that did not require color. If other reviewers did not do likewise, then absolutely it will be very expensive to operate if you are not using or need color for the documents I described. Setting the default printer to HP CLJ2840 PCL 6 - Black_White should be your first order of business. If you don't, you are wasting your color ink supply and it will take a lot longer to print a black ink only document.

I don't care for the fact that on fax errors a page will print with a little blue ink on it and the rest is black ink. Tech support said there is nothing that can be adjusted in the settings to avoid it. It's pretty clear HP is simply trying to deplete your ink supply. The splash of blue ink serves no purpose. Also, on fax activity log pages it prints in blue "HP Color LaserJet" and "2840" in red and the rest is black ink. Complete waste. I don't need the blue and red on the page.

I have used the HP 2840 to print postcards and inserts and the print quality is great. If you don't need the color for everyday printing like myself, then I suggest, if it is possible , to avoid placing the color cartridges in the printer until you have a color print job because of the issue mentioned above. I also suspect that the color ink gets used up a little each day even when it cycles. It will cycle many times during the day unless you change the setting to do it once per day. If you get this printer, you will want to do change this after installing (call tech support). I have this printer next to my phone and when I was talking to clients the printer would start cycling and people would say what is going on over there.

What was disturbing is the number of times during the day that it would do a cycling. I called tech support and they got it down to once per day. When it cycles it makes a loud noise that lasts less than a minute.

I don't see why HP couldn't add whatever it takes to muffle the noise. The HP tech guy said it would add to the weight of the unit, but I am all for it considering how disturbing, annoying, and low the printer is. The print noise is a little louder compared to the HP 3200 and HP 5L.

I just noticed today that at some point I will have to replace the image drum on the unit. It currently runs about $78.00. I never had to do this with my prior HP laser printers (black ink only).

This printer doesn't read my media card SDHC. It currently reads Unknown memory card error. I searched online and others have had the same issue and I haven't found any solutions and now I will have to pay HP to get their help to fix it even though it has never worked. I tend to insert the memory cards into the PC using my USB adapter and have only tried to use this feature on the HP 2840 when I couldn't readily locate the adapter. I have used the HP online instant support feature that performs an online diagnostics of the printer, but it has never resolved my prior issues and once it ran for over 4 hours without giving me any results. The diagnostics is a total waste.

I am not sure if I would buy another HP 2840. I would do a little more homework to see if the other models require replacing the drum at some point, do they cycle through during the day and if so can you completely turn this feature off, will it operate if you only have the black ink cartridges installed with the default set to black_white, how loud is the printer during printing AND cycling, and does the printer use color ink on fax reports and error pages. When I did my homework last year, this was one of the best models out there for the price.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Reliability I've Seen in a Printer   November 21, 2008
My wife encouraged me to buy a color printer for my consulting business. I saw that the HP 2840 had good reviews so bought one. The quality is good and I don't have a problem with the software installation or use.

About three months after purchase, the printer stopped working. A call to HP was curious - the guy seemed to know what the problem was without much diagnosis. About a week later, when the repairman finally showed up, he told me that HP had shipped the machines KNOWING that there was a faulty low voltage power supply. When he first started repairing them, it took him about 6 hours to dig into the bowels of the printer, but he'd done so many of them he only needed about 90 minutes to fix mine.

Well, six months later and guess what, the printer is dead again. I'm hoping it takes less than a week to fix it this time.

BTW - replacing the printer cartridges and engine is horrendously expensive if you go through HP - almost half the price of the machine itself. I'm going to resurrect my old HP-4.

1 out of 5 stars Rip off ! DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER   November 17, 2008
We purchased this all in one printer for our small business, because it offered (on paper) a lot of functions in one single device and because it had network capabilities.

We bought it based on past experience with HP laser printers (which used to be excellent) and we thought this one would match HP's reputation.

We use this printer with Mac computers and the software installation was simple and it now works fine. We tried installing the drivers on Windows XP and we gave up after a few hours.

The printing is a bit slow, especially if you use color, but is decent. The scanning function works fine (at least with a Mac, we gave up trying to use it on Windows.)

So, why do I give it only one star and advise everybody NOT to buy this printer? Here is the deal killer: The drum and the cartridges used by this machine have a chip on them that decides on its own when it is time to replace them and will simply SHUT DOWN the printing function until you pop a brand new one into this beast.

To be more specific, there is a chip on the drum and on the cartridges that counts the number of pages you print with them and simply self-destruct once you reach the threshold hard coded on the chip. This means that you have cartridges half full that have been used lightly (for instance, if you have a single pixel that needs color on the page, it counts as one page for the chip on every color cartidge!) that the chip forces you to replace. If you don't replace the cartridge when the chip says that you have to do so, the printer REFUSES to print whatsoever.

This is a total rip off. Let the user decide when it is time to replace the cartridge! Sure, at some point, the pages will appear a bit faint, but it's ok for us when we simply print out pages of code to debug or working documents that we are going to write on.

Obviously, this "feature" has been put in there to force people to buy more cartridges (at [...] bucks a pop, it piles up quickly since you have four of them in this printer and the drum is about [...] bucks) than they actually need.

Once we realized we had been had by HP, we were furious. Obviously, we advise any potential buyer to go look elsewhere and we have made the decision to replace this thing (even if it costs us money to do so) and we are definitely done with HP. Such a rip off scheme says a lot about what this company has become.

No more HP products for us, ever.

1 out of 5 stars Stereotypical HP Customer Support   September 22, 2008
The scanner is not working on ours so we attempted to contact HP customer support...

"Hi, I need help figuring out why my Color Laserjet 2840 won't scan. I'm trying to scan a document in so I can fax it."

Okay, what is your serial number

"xxx-xxxx-xx"

I'm sorry, that device is out of warranty.

"How long is the warranty?"

One year.

"But I just bought it two-months ago."

Well, in that case you probably bought it used...

"No, I bought it from Office Max"

I have never heard of them, they probably sell used items.

"No, they are one of the largest office supply companies in the United States."

Well, in that case, I need you to send us a copy of your proof of purchase

"Okay, how?"

You can fax it to us.

"We use Efax and have to scan something to fax it, as you are aware, my scanner is broken which is why I am calling you"

Okay, well do you have e-mail?

"Yes."

Please scan the proof of purchase and send it to us at....

"Wait, what do you want me to scan it with?"

Circles ensue...
