2 years use reality check January 9, 2009 I've used my printer for about 2 years on a daily basis and here are my conclusions.
The printer is rugged and has held up. All I have had to do is add paper and change toner.
It prints well and quickly. No smudging.
It does curl pages, but that is not an issue for me.
The duplexer works flawlessly. No jams...ever. I always print duplex.
The envelope printing is a problem. I ALWAYS get a wrinkled enevelope. (I use legal size envelopes.) I have learned to accept the fact.
When the printer turns on there is a big current surge that makes my UPS (that the printer is NOT plugged into) detect a power sag and I get a beep from the UPS. I have gotten used to it.
On very long print jobs, the printer will over-heat and shut down. By long, I mean like a tax return including supporting documents. Rare, but it happens.
Overall, its a very good printer with a few blemishes. At a price of under two hundred dollars, it is a bargain.
I would buy another one and recommend one to a friend.
Great Printer But I've Got A Snag...Any Suggestions? January 5, 2009 I've had this printer for about 2 years now so I've had some time with it. All in all, a really great printer with great duplexing, etc. The toner cartridge sensor (I guess a laser or something that reads toner levels) can tell you that you need a new toner cartridge when there's still toner left in it, but there's an easy fix on the internet for that (also here on Amazon)...just tape over the sensor window and you'll get a lot more pages out of it.
I did have a problem with my paper tray tonight though, so leaving this review in hopes someone has an idea. The little spring that props up the paper is disconnected at one end (the long end) and for the life of me I can't figure out where to reattach it. The problem is that now unless the paper tray is completely full, the paper isn't lifted up and it reads as "out of paper". Any suggestions? If so, please leave as a comment.
But a great printer and I've put a LOT of pages through it. Also, get the high-capacity toner catridge...it's not that much more and it gives you a LOT more pages.
Good price/performance ratio December 21, 2008 A very good black & white printer for the price with fast duplex printing.
Pros: - Quick warmup time - Easy network setup - Works under Windows/Linux - Fast printing - Reliable duplex
Cons: - No true Postscript but Brother version of Postscript (works fine on Linux but sometimes you have to switch to the PCL driver on Windows to make it print some documents) - Does not handle very well thick paper (if you want to print fancy invitations or cards on sturdier paper)
Perfect cheap product meets my needs December 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought a refurb HL5250DN, that lasted out the 1 year warrantee. Now on the second toner cartridge. My first toner cartridge lasted exactly 2500 pages, so I bought the same model to replace it (TN550). My actual cost to date is 4.2 cents a page, including the cost of buying the printer. I use paper that cost .5 cents a page on top of the 4.2 cents. Networking and software control is plug and play on my home network. For my home office it is perfect. Duplexing is sweet, I use two printer setups, so I do not need to turn duplexing on and off (Apple user) to switch. BTW, as a Master Educational Technologist, I would not recommend this solution for any K/8 classroom environment, because the unit is engineered with a lot of plastic (gears, guides, multifunction widgets) that, in my experience, more often than not, get broken when serving kids.
Love this printer! December 16, 2008 I bought this about a year ago! Cannot say anything bad about this printer! I home-school and have printed out many many books, assignments, recipes, and a ton of other things! The toner last a long time! Was an excellent buy!! Would buy again! :)
